With a Facebookstyle multiplayer section, it could be huge. I've barely scratched the surface, but you can probably tell Cities XL is an exciting prospect. You just need to have the correct terrain and you can build any of the GEM buildings in your existing cities, or you can start a new one. You can have numerous cities on the go at once, so don't think you'll have to stick them all on one map. It's like gluing a whole new title onto one that is already huge as it is. The observa/it among you will have seen plenty of ski or beach Tycoon games that will have less material than Cities XL's GEMs.

There are two GEMs included in the full game, at the time of writing: a beach module and a ski resort. The scope is difficult to convey in such a short space, but when I say that its gameplay extension modules (GEMs) system allows Monte Cristo to seamlessly add in whole new Tycoon game-style elements. Within seconds I was creating a settlement that impressed those watching, even if my triangular fruit farm drew bemused stares. Monte Cristo have worked hard to make the interface as user-friendly as possible. Cities XL has all these things, but they are presented in a way that doesn't feel like you're being force-fed a ludicrous amount of stats. You have so many demands to fulfil and inaccessible economic and civic screens crop up all over the place, swamping you. A problem for other city builders is that they can be intimidating when you first start. World Of Citiesĭespite the site of Cities XL's play area, it's genuinely easy to start playing. As in Monte Cristo's previous city games ( City Life, for example) you can zoom all the way in, watching your citizens go about their daily business. The camera zoomed out and it only covered a third of the map.

I was shown a "here's one we made earlier" settlement and it was easily as brg as one from any other city builder. Each map is huge and will take weeks of dedicated play to fill up. The game pans out as you'd expect -lay down residential, industrial and commercial zones, along with a veritable bounty of more unusual ones -and watch your city grow.

But not this time.įor those who are unaware, Cities XL is the first proper attempt to take a city building game to the internet, providing an online multiplayer mode, as well as the traditional single-player, that'll encompass the best features of the genre, plus a whole realm of social networking and co-operation. Often When You hear about a title made by a small European developer, the temptation is to dismiss it when you've got 20 or so big-budget games cluttering up your desk. However, it may be worth a shot if you're itching to create your very own dystopian future. It's just tough to get to, and we can't, at present, recommend subscribing. Balancing budgets, the needs of four classes, resources, pollution and the rest of a city's rigmarole becomes a bit of a headache.Īll the same, Cities XL does have some pleasure to eek from it. And the subscription isn't that good: new buildings and resources, updates, and a 35% reduction on expansions isn't worth the fee.įinally, there's also too much going on for the UI. The MMO ideas are good on paper, but you can only text chat, there's no meeting area for the avatars, and few incentives to work together. The saddest point about Cities XL is that it's a sound, addictive, at times attractive, city builder beneath layers of bad decisions. This is tough to justify unless you intend to sink hours and hours into Cities XL, build sprawling metropolises, and socialise with players. These can be traded with the Al-driven OmniCorp or other players, if you pay the subscription fee. You'll also want to build up stockpiles of trade resources like oil and water. You can zoom in and walk around the cities - which is all good until you notice they all look the same and a bit rubbish. This fast becomes complex as you build the city's infrastructure, providing services, making sure the environment doesn't go to shit, and try to keep everyone happy. You build a city by filling it with four levels of workers - unqualified, qualified, executives and elites - and building them a workplace and amenities. This doesn't mean it isn't fun, it's just hard to sink the initial hours into. It's a real-time citybuilder that has the management of Civilization and the presentation of a Crayola-penned Watchmen. Like a Tramp thrusting his crotch at you while singing Katy Perry, Cities XL makes a bad first impression.
